The attention of the investment community is gradually turning to the US elections. The first TV debate confirmed existing expectations of the quality of the candidates. Away from the cameras, rates of inflation continue to develop constructively. Both equities and bonds have benefited from this development. Swiss investors have experienced something of a headwind given the stronger Swiss franc.
The European economy is recovering and stabilising – as is clear from the leading economic indicators, which are now back above the growth threshold for the first time in a while. There are glimmers of hope in Germany too: company executives are looking to the future with renewed optimism. They are hoping for a slight improvement in growth, driven by customers with a desire to spend.
What does this mean for equity markets? Is it a good idea to invest in US equities? Or perhaps European equities too should be assigned a greater portfolio weighting?
