    , 3 minutes

Did you enter the professional world in the 2024 tax year? The start of your career will no doubt have involved a number of changes and challenges. And now comes the next challenge: completing your tax return! With valuable tips and tricks, you can reduce your tax liability in a targeted way.

    Occupational expenses

    Travel costs:

If your work is very close to your place of residence and you ride your bicycle to work, as much as CHF 700 can be deducted for your bicycle costs. If you use public transport for your commute, you can deduct the railcard subscription costs. If you use your own car to get to work, the costs can be deducted under certain conditions.

    Costs of food and beverages:

For canteen meals, the discounted deduction (220 days × CHF 7.50) must be declared. Otherwise, the flat rate of 220 days × CHF 15 applies to a full-time position. Important: If you work part-time, the working days must be adjusted on a pro rata basis.

    Training and development:

Training, further education and retraining costs can be deducted from taxes after deducting the employer's share. Teaching materials and course fees are likewise deductible.

Pillar 3a, deduction for pension contributions

By paying pension contributions into Pillar 3a, you not only save for retirement but also benefit in particular from the annual tax savings. The maximum contribution in the 2024 tax year was CHF 7,056. This contribution is fully deductible for income tax purposes.

Health insurance premiums and health costs

    • Health insurance premiums are tax-deductible. The maximum deduction for individuals with AHV contributions is CHF 3,300 (canton) and CHF 1,800 (federation).
    • Medical expenses borne by you appear on the cost statement of the health insurance company. These costs should be declared in the tax return. Dental costs and other self-paid health costs can also be included in the medical costs.

    Charitable donations

Grants to charitable causes, foundations or political parties can be deducted for tax purposes from a minimum total amount of CHF 100.

    Rent deduction

If you are a tenant of an apartment in the Canton of Zug, the rent deduction can be declared. 30% of the net apartment rent, excluding the parking space, can be deducted up to a maximum of CHF 10,600 for the 2024 tax year.

It’s important to take into account all deductions right from the start. You can easily reduce taxes with just a few tips and tricks. Especially for young professionals, it can make sense to seek the assistance of a tax expert.
